9.21.15

CFC Family,
I apologize that social media is the outlet that will be used to relay this message, but the logistics of getting everyone together at the same time/under one roof would be near impossible. With that being said, I appreciate you taking the time to read this message and please follow it through to the end.

As of October 2015, I will have owned this gym for 7 years! From humble beginnings in 2008 with the first handful of members, when we rented space (10’x20’), to what y’all know now with 3,400 sq. feet, and hundreds of lives being touched over the years. CrossFit Charleston has been my life’s work, my sole passion, my obsession for each and every day of those 7 years.

I started this gym in 2008 with only 3 goals in mind.
1.      Pay back Mom and Dad. They loaned my $5,000 to get it rolling. (Rubber flooring is expensive)
Keep a mindset of “Passion over Profit.” I promised myself to never let the money side of running a business get in the way of the services I provided.
3.       Enjoy the HELL out of every day and show each and every athlete MY love for CrossFit, in the hopes that they TOO would fall in love with it.

Fast forward through those same 7 years, and I can honestly say, I have “successfully” met and surpassed each of those goals. I lay my head down each and every night and I thank God for consistently providing me with a group of athletes that support my passion, my dream, and my livelihood. It has been an AMAZING 7 years. It would be fun to think about the number of wall balls I’ve watched, weights I’ve heard crash after a heavy clean, or smiles I’ve seen on an athlete’s face that “didn’t think they could do that” and then proved themselves wrong mid-WOD!

I’m telling you all of this because sometime about 2 years ago, God put it on my heart to expand my goals. My loan to my parents had been paid off, the daily grind meant more to me than any dollar in my bank account, and I truly believed that if you were to ask any person on this planet that had trained at our gym, they would surely tell you about my passion for coaching, and how as a coach I am completely obsessed with helping people find “fitness freedom” through CrossFit. With the initial 3 goals met, it was time for something new…

God gave me 2 words to that would outline my next goal and forever change the course of CFC…
He said “CREATE OPPORTUNITY.” All of a sudden I had a completely new purpose.

Starting CFC had created an opportunity in my life when I wasn’t sure where I was going professionally, and now it was my time to “pay it forward.” Since that time, it has been on my heart to bring on like-minded individuals that have a passion for coaching, are high energy, and had a heart for helping people! I wanted to surround myself with coaches that were looking for an “opportunity.”

I would like to tell you all that as of October 1, I am stepping down as head coach of CrossFit Charleston. This has been a plan that has been in motion for a while, and I am fully confident and excited to tell you that Coach Michael Dawley will be replacing most of the classes that I was covering on a daily basis. Coach Michael came to this gym almost 3 years ago, first as an athlete and then as an assistant coach. He has shadowed me for countless hours, has built a fantastic following among our athletes and has truly been a positive face and powerful leader inside these gym walls! Michael is currently taking undergraduate classes at Trident, with the hopes of transferring to College of Charleston to pursue a degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition. He has an absolute passion for health and fitness, and most importantly to me, he has a love and respect for each athlete at CFC. To say he is excited about this opportunity would be an understatement. I am beyond stoked for him and feel an incredible sense of responsibility to lead him in a way that I know everyone will be successful!

To all who are wondering, and still reading, my heart, passion, and focus for CrossFit Charleston is stronger than ever! I am still the owner and I will still be in the gym multiple times a week! Also, all of those evil, evil “CrossFit Charleston WODS” that you have come to know and love will still be coming from the mind of yours truly! I will be taking on more of a managerial role on a day to day basis, and I am excited to take a few steps back from the heart of the action, to be able to forecast more events, assess the need for specialty classes, develop stronger administrative operations, and basically help facilitate general upkeep of the gym as needed!

This is a brand new season for this amazing gym, and I am excited to watch it thrive!! My hope and prayer is that within my last 7 years of coaching at CFC that, if nothing else, I have been able to “create an atmosphere of success” for our athletes. I believe that is only attained by having effective WOD programming, willing and hardworking athletes, and incredibly passionate coaches. I know this gym like the back of my hand, and I know we have the most “REAL.RAW.RELENTLESS.” athletes a BOX could ask for!! Leave the rest to us, and I promise you that we all will continue to climb ONWARD AND UPWARD.

I love you all more than you know.
See you at the BOX!!
